The core concept behind the lighting design for the Residential Loft House was to treat a domestic environment as an art gallery, combining general illumination with atmospheric lighting in a composition capable of introducing both visual appeal and spatial hierarchy to a richly articulated interior.
Within this eclectic open-plan space—conceived as a true “home of art”—the design approach sought to work in harmony with the existing lighting levels, introducing accent lighting to enhance the numerous artworks throughout the residence and creating a delicate balance of light and shadow. The primary challenge lay in intervening within an existing lighting system—adapting to the electrical infrastructure, engaging with the home’s strongly decorative language, aligning with the existing fixtures, and striving to create lighting effects consistent both with the displayed artworks and with a domestic setting designed for everyday living.
The proposed solution embraces a lighting approach that does not seek to conceal itself, but rather asserts its presence as a tool for spatial interpretation. Accordingly, the artworks were illuminated using dedicated fixtures, custom-designed specifically for the project. Some of these luminaires are motorized, providing the system with a high degree of versatility and adaptability. Such a system allows the fixtures to remain functional even when the positioning of the artworks changes and, crucially, facilitates precise beam aiming in spaces with significant ceiling heights. In the kitchen area, where fixtures were required to be offset from the wall at a precise distance, mounting arms were introduced. In this instance, a design constraint was resolved through a solution that is at once functional, decorative, and fully consistent with the aesthetic language of the space.
The final result is a lighting intervention that is both discreet and bold—aligned with the tone of the existing environment, yet not subordinate to it. It defines clear focal points while preserving the livability of the space, and at the same time delivers a lighting system that fully embodies its dual technical and decorative role.
